Joe Stork co-founded the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP) in 1971 and served as editor until 1995. He joined HRW’s Middle East and North Africa division in 1996 and became a vital part of GCHR’s Advisory Board in 2011, guiding its efforts and achievements, especially as Chair from 2019 to 2022. Even as he faced personal loss after his wife’s passing in March 2024, Joe continued his steadfast work for human rights, undeterred in his belief that freedom and justice would eventually prevail. His absence will resonate deeply within human rights circles as a significant loss to his colleagues and the broader movement.
