New Study Reveals Rising Addiction to Digital Media Among Young People

A new study conducted in Germany unveils a startling reality: young people are grappling with an overwhelming wave of digital media addiction. Rainer Thomasius, a leading figure at the German Centre for Addiction Research, warns that this crisis is vastly underestimated. The research highlights that over 25% of 10 to 17-year-olds engage in risky media use, with 4.7% classified as addicted to platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.

The findings are particularly alarming, revealing that problematic media usage among youngsters ranges from five to fifty times more prevalent than risky alcohol or cannabis consumption. Experts emphasise that while media operates differently than substances like alcohol, it still disrupts the central nervous system and triggers the same brain reward responses. This parallels the risks associated with traditional substance abuse, presenting new challenges for today’s youth.

A German study reveals that over a quarter of young people aged 10 to 17 exhibit risky digital media use, with nearly 5% considered addicted. This prevalence far exceeds levels of alcohol and cannabis use, prompting urgent concern from experts about the mental health implications of heavy media engagement.

The research illuminates the urgent need for greater awareness and intervention regarding digital media addiction among young people. With staggering addiction rates far outpacing traditional substance abuse, prioritising education and preventive measures is crucial to safeguard the mental health of future generations. By recognising this escalating issue, we may mitigate the detrimental effects of media overuse.
