During this session, WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun took centre stage to deliver a poignant speech on the severe repression Uyghurs face, notably their denied religious freedoms and the extensive transnational repression involving forced deportations. He appealed passionately for the international community to hold China accountable for its blatant human rights abuses against the Uyghurs.
Founded in 2004, the World Uyghur Congress functions as an advocate for the rights and freedoms of the Uyghurs, an ethnic group predominantly residing in Xinjiang, China. In recent years, an alarming number of reports have illustrated the horrific conditions faced by over a million detained Uyghurs, who endure indoctrination, abuse, and cultural erasure under the guise of an anti-extremism campaign.
While the Chinese government defends these actions as countermeasures against extremism, many organisations label them as crimes against humanity, including genocide. Uyghurs continue to face exhaustive surveillance, forced labour, and religious oppression, alongside restrictions on their language and cultural heritage, culminating in increasingly reported instances of forced sterilizations and familial separations.
