Libraries have evolved into vibrant community centres, and PEI libraries exemplify this transformation by offering more than just books. With the backing of the Live Well PEI Wellness Grant, the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre (CLLC) Foundation is set to unveil two innovative wellness kits focused on heart health and memory support.
Krystal Dionne, a regional librarian, and Jennifer Howard, a board member of the CLLC Foundation, express their enthusiasm for these additions. “We love finding ways to serve our community,” Krystal shares, emphasising that while books are vital, the libraries can extend their reach to assist the community even further. This grant highlights their commitment to being responsive to local needs.
Each Heart Health kit comprises a blood pressure monitor, fingertip pulse oximeter, healthy cookbooks, exercise manuals, and resources from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Cognitive Wellness kits offer games and puzzles designed to aid individuals experiencing memory decline, with options tailored for both early and intermediate stages, incorporating resources from Alzheimer’s PEI.
In total, 20 kits will be accessible across the Island in both French and English, making them as easy to borrow as any book. Krystal outlines the goal: to provide valuable resources, adapt to community needs, secure ongoing funding, and enhance quality of life across PEI.
The Live Well PEI Wellness Grant is instrumental in funding projects that encourage chronic disease prevention and overall well-being, demonstrating its vital role in elevating the quality of life for Islanders.
