Improving Sleep: IU Students Craft Vision Boards at ‘Sweet Dreams’ Event

At the recent ‘Sweet Dreams’ event hosted by IU Student Wellness, students crafted vision boards aimed at reflecting on and enhancing their sleep habits and environments. Set against the backdrop of the Wellness House, participants used stickers, patterned tape, and magazines to express their personal sleep goals, while also taking home essential sleep aids like masks and ear plugs.
The event, intentionally relaxing amid the stressful midterm season, was guided by Peer Health and Wellness Educators. Alex Kiefer, a junior at IU, emphasised the laid-back nature of this interactive activity, which encouraged students to visually articulate their sleep aspirations. A presentation on sleep habits and disorders preceded the creative session, thoughtful strategies for better sleep included avoiding caffeine six hours before bedtime and maintaining consistent sleep schedules.
The event encouraged students to share their sleep disturbances, culminating in a word cloud from common answers like stress and anxiety after scanning a QR code. Participants then used cutouts from magazines to create their vision boards, fostering a communal approach to discussing sleep, often viewed as an inevitable struggle in college. Kiefer passionately remarked on the need to change the narrative surrounding poor sleep among students.
Peyton Jeffers, the event organiser and an experienced supervisor within the Peer Health and Wellness team, highlighted the importance of addressing sleep issues on campus. Citing data indicating students’ reduced sleep correlating with lower academic performance, she noted the need to help peers recognise and alter their sleep behaviours. With an aim to inspire self-reflection and gradual improvement, the event proved effective in encouraging mindful approaches to sleep among the students.
