KABUL—Amnesty International has condemned the Taliban’s severe discrimination against Afghan women and girls, declaring it a form of dehumanization. On International Women’s Day, the rights group highlighted how women’s rights have been systematically eliminated, reducing them to mere roles as mothers and caretakers, largely confined to their homes with no freedoms to pursue education or employment.
The Taliban’s oppressive policies have criminalized women’s presence in public, stripping them of their identities and voices. Advocate Mitra Mehran elaborated on this in an Amnesty article, stating that women have become invisible shadows in their own lives, subjected to a ruthless regime of control.
Three years into this regime, an entire generation of girls has seen their futures snatched away, with women battling for fundamental rights once more. Mehran has called for increased global support for Afghan women’s resistance, warning that the brutality against half the population should prompt urgent international intervention.
She questioned the world’s commitment to human rights by asking if the ongoing persecution and near-erasure of a nation’s female demographic could go unchallenged.
