Resistance Training: The Key to Better Sleep for Seniors

In a recent review published on 4th March 2025, researchers have found that seniors suffering from insomnia can significantly benefit from resistance training, such as weightlifting or body-weight exercises like push-ups. This form of exercise was shown to improve sleep quality more effectively than aerobics, balance, or flexibility workouts. The study, led by Dr. Kittiphon Nagaviroj from Mahidol University, highlights the importance of strengthening activities in enhancing sleep for older adults.

The evidence indicates a pressing issue; as age progresses, sleep quality often diminishes, with up to one-fifth of seniors experiencing insomnia. Although various types of exercise have been demonstrated to alleviate insomnia symptoms, the specific effectiveness of each type remained uncertain until this comprehensive review. Researchers examined 25 clinical trials involving nearly 2,200 participants, providing a robust analysis of the results.

The trials contrasted aerobic exercises, such as cycling, swimming, or even gardening, against resistance training. Notably, individuals participating in resistance workouts experienced an average enhancement of 5.7 points in their sleep quality scores. In comparison, those engaging in aerobic exercises saw a 3.7-point improvement, while combined exercise routines contributed a 2.5-point increase.

The researchers concluded that both strengthening and aerobic exercises significantly improve sleep quality compared to normal everyday activities. For seniors, it remains crucial to consult with healthcare professionals before embarking on any new exercise regimen, ensuring it aligns with personal health needs and capabilities.

A recent review reveals resistance training is the most effective exercise for alleviating insomnia in seniors, outperforming aerobic, balance, and flexibility workouts. Strength training improved sleep quality scores by 5.7 points, while aerobic exercises yielded a 3.7 point increase. Seniors should consult with a doctor before starting any exercise programme.

This revelation underscores the importance of resistance training for seniors grappling with insomnia, offering a viable solution to enhance their sleep quality. While all forms of exercise prove beneficial, resistance training stands out as the champion. Consulting with a healthcare provider before initiating an exercise plan will ensure the chosen approach aligns with individual health conditions.
