Advocating for Palestinian Rights: NCCM’s Mission for Justice in Canada

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) staunchly advocates for Palestinian human rights, compelling Canadian leaders to maintain a consistent stance on human rights issues. The plight of Palestinians strikes a profound chord, resonating deeply within the hearts of many Canadian Muslims. Recent reports from the International Court of Justice suggest a potential genocide occurring in Gaza, which has horrified millions of Canadians witnessing the unfolding tragedy daily.

NCCM is dedicated to amplifying Palestinian voices in Canada, ensuring their realities and aspirations are at the forefront of advocacy efforts. The organisation calls on all parties to acknowledge the humanity of Palestinians and to address human rights abuses with the same fervour they would for any nation facing injustice.

Our advocacy has led to significant achievements, such as pushing for a unilateral weapons export ban to Israel amidst ongoing human rights violations, and urging the Canadian government to accept arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu. Moreover, we were instrumental in Canada recognising anti-Palestinian racism as a policy imperative, making it the first G-7 nation to do so.

In terms of impact statistics, in 2024, nearly 1 million emails were sent to Canadian leaders advocating for a balanced human rights approach. Additionally, advocacy efforts led to the resumption of $100 million in funding to UNRWA, which had been paused, jeopardising humanitarian aid during conflict. Furthermore, 45% of Canadians believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

In May 2021, in direct response to violent attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque, NCCM rallied over 100,000 Canadians who contacted their representatives. This collective voice urged the Canadian government to denounce the Israeli actions and call for peace, leading to meaningful governmental statements condemning the violence and advocating for de-escalation.

The NCCM has tirelessly pursued justice, from addressing unethical intervention in judicial appointments to pushing for new NDP policies on Palestinian rights. In 2023, sustained advocacy resulted in a federal condemnation of increased Israeli settlement growth, highlighting the ongoing struggles against occupation.

As calls for a ceasefire intensified in response to escalating violence in Gaza, Canadian political voices echoed these demands. Municipalities across Canada, summoned by NCCM, passed motions endorsing ceasefires and showcasing a united Canadian front for peace. The Canadian government also recognised the need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to protect civilians and facilitate aid entry into Gaza.

Further efforts include the introduction of a Special Measures Program to assist Palestinian families with Canadian ties in Gaza. Despite challenges, such as funding cuts to UNRWA, NCCM helped restore vital resources for Palestinian children in need. In January 2024, the House of Commons passed a non-binding motion banning arms exports to Israel, reflecting the growing awareness and advocacy surrounding this issue.

In September 2024, NCCM thwarted attempts by General Dynamics to exploit loopholes in the arms ban, emphasising transparency and respect for international law. Our collective efforts have imposed significant accountability on Canadian policies regarding Palestine, reflecting a commitment to justice and human rights.

Most importantly, the lives of Palestinians are still at risk. Together, we must continue advocating for human rights, ensuring Canada aligns itself with justice. You can engage with us by sharing your voice, volunteering, or donating to support our ongoing efforts in advocating for the rights of Canadian Muslims and the Palestinians.

NCCM passionately advocates for Palestinian rights, urging Canada to uphold a consistent stance on human rights amidst increasing violence and injustice. The organization has spearheaded initiatives leading to a weapons export ban to Israel and the recognition of anti-Palestinian racism. In a climate of shocking statistics and dire human rights violations, NCCM mobilises public response and Canadian political action to demand justice and humanitarian aid for Palestinians.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) vigorously champions Palestinian human rights, advocating for consistent Canadian policies supporting justice and humanitarian aid. The organisation’s numerous accomplishments demonstrate a growing awareness in Canadian society regarding the grave issues faced by Palestinians. Despite significant progress, the peril facing Palestinian lives remains urgent, underlining the need for continued advocacy and community engagement to uphold human rights.
