Geneva witnessed a powerful rally as the Tibetan Community of Switzerland and Liechtenstein (TCSL) protested outside the United Nations headquarters on the inaugural day of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This demonstration aimed to spotlight the escalating human rights violations occurring in Tibet under Chinese governance, a situation they deemed dire and urgent.
In his opening remarks, UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk emphasised the vital importance of protecting human rights and adhering to the rule of law to prevent the atrocities of the past from repeating. He cautioned that unchecked violations—evident in the form of violent crackdowns, civilian attacks, and extensive abuses—risk becoming a haunting reality once more. Türk highlighted that mechanisms like the UN Charter and international law stand as crucial defences against such injustices, reiterating his Office’s dedication to monitoring human rights globally.
The Tibetan Community protested in Geneva coinciding with the UNHRC’s 58th session, highlighting human rights abuses in Tibet under Chinese rule. UN High Commissioner Volker Türk warned against unchecked violations, while TCSL’s Phuntsok Topgyal urged global solidarity and action. The protest included participation from Tibetan and Chinese Christian supporters, together advocating for fundamental rights amidst ongoing repression. The Tibet Bureau plans further advocacy during the UN session addressing multiple human rights issues.
The protest not only shed light on Tibet’s critical human rights landscape but also reinforced the call for international advocacy against offending regimes.
