Those who made the brave journey to Tashkent, Uzbekistan in search of education are now approaching graduation, ready to embrace a world of unexplored possibilities. Initiatives by UNDP and the European Union have paved the way for these women, granting them academic opportunities in Central Asia that promise to change their futures.
Despite facing immense challenges in Afghanistan—including the oppression of women’s rights, food scarcity, and ongoing health crises—hope glimmers through adversity. The World Health Organization reveals that 14.3 million Afghans currently require health assistance, underscoring the urgent need for support in education and health sectors. Amid this crisis, Afghan women are fighting to elevate their standing and secure a brighter future.
Among these resilient women is Laila, studying at Tashkent State University of Economics, who will soon earn her Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) certificate. Once a medicine student, Laila shared, “I always dreamt of becoming a doctor to help people in need… this scholarship allowed me to continue my studies,” despite the hurdles she faced along the way.
Laila faced significant obstacles while leaving Afghanistan, as her father’s initial hesitance and fears cast a shadow over her ambitions. But the support of her mother and the kindness of fellow Afghans helped her forge ahead. “After many challenges, I finally convinced my father… my family realised that I was right to pursue this scholarship,” Laila reflected, grateful for the opportunity to study amidst the tightening restrictions on women’s rights.
Reflecting on her journey, Laila harbours ambitious dreams, eager to become a United Nations Volunteer and contribute to global initiatives. “My long-term goal is to study more and eventually work for the United Nations… ” she asserts, reminding us all that hope persists, even in the darkest of times.
