UW Economics Professor Kim Ruhl Joins President’s Council of Economic Advisers

Kim Ruhl, the esteemed Curt and Sue Culver Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin, has been appointed to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) by the Trump administration. Known for his expertise in international economics, Ruhl co-directs the Center of Research on the Wisconsin Economy. His appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first economist from UW–Madison to join this elite advisory board.

As a member of the CEA, Ruhl will collaborate with a chairman and two other economists, including Professor Pierre Yared from Columbia Business School. Together, they will engage in high-level discussions on economic policy under the guidance of CEA chairman Stephen Miran. Ruhl expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity, stating his excitement to apply his expertise to pressing public policy issues.

In his new role, Ruhl will step away from his duties at UW while Professor Anath Seshadri takes charge of the CROWE during his absence. This transition not only highlights Ruhl’s impactful contributions to economic policy but also enhances the University of Wisconsin’s recognition in the broader academic community. “Kim is a deeply insightful economist, and we are thrilled that he will be in a position to impact economic policy at a national level through his appointment to the Council,” noted Eric Wilcots, Dean of the College of Letters & Science.

University of Wisconsin’s Kim Ruhl has been appointed to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, making history as the first UW–Madison economist to hold the position. Ruhl will work alongside other economists to influence national economic policy during his leave from the university, with Professor Anath Seshadri stepping in as CROWE’s director.

Ruhl’s appointment to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers showcases the influential role of academic economists in shaping national policies. As UW–Madison’s first representative on this council, his insights on international economics will significantly contribute to discussions on public policy. The collaboration with fellow economists and the CEA chairman promises to enhance the nation’s economic strategies and, ultimately, its prosperity.
