The province is currently engaged in the “Preserving and Promoting the Traditional Cultural Values of Ethnic Minorities in Association with Tourism Development” project, which is aligned with national goals for socio-economic development in ethnic areas. With an investment exceeding VNĐ21 billion (about US$838,300) from 2021 to 2025, this project is a significant stride towards enhancing local cultural heritage.
As a result, 29 cultural and artistic clubs in impoverished neighborhoods now thrive with new resources: sound systems, traditional orchestras, and cultural costumes have flooded in. Moreover, 53 community cultural houses have been revitalized, serving as hubs for cultural exchange and celebration. Contributions from local authorities have been instrumental in preserving the unique cultural tapestry woven by the Khmer and other ethnic groups in Sóc Trăng.
In the words of Lý Lết, a master of Khmer temple construction, this cultural revival would not be possible without timely support from the government. His gratitude extends towards those championing the preservation of this cultural lineage, ensuring that its distinct traditions continue to flourish and contribute to sustainable tourism in the region.
Lâm Chí Thường, who leads the Khmer Traditional Music Group in Liêu Tú Commune, expressed joy over the resources provided to his group. With new instruments and traditional costumes, they are better equipped to share and celebrate their music. Thường’s optimism reflects a widespread sentiment among local artists, knowing that their traditions are nurtured with local and governmental support for generations to come.
