Under the aegis of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, the European Association for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage (APEJ) marks its 20th anniversary at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. François Moyse, president of the AEPJ, welcomed attendees, stating, “Over these two decades, we have built bridges between cultures and generations, from Spain to Poland, from Italy to Lithuania across the European continent.” He highlighted that this anniversary is not merely a celebration but a testament to the collective endeavors to maintain Jewish heritage as vital to European culture and shared history.
Luxembourg’s Minister of Culture, Eric Thill, emphasized the importance of culture during this presidency. He remarked, “We live in a time when democratic values are under pressure, and this is precisely why the culture of memory is so essential today.” He noted that APEJ’s work centers on Jewish heritage, which fosters a deeper understanding of shared histories and promotes tolerance and respect among communities.
Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General, praised APEJ’s achievements over the years. He noted that the European Route of Jewish Heritage unifies members from 24 nations, enriching cultural and heritage dialogues. He asserted, “This Association has done exceptional work to preserve and promote Jewish culture, not only keeping it alive but also renewing it.” This embodies the essence of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.
The celebration included a roundtable on Medieval Jewish Heritage in Europe, featuring prominent experts, alongside activities that illuminated the vibrancy of Jewish culture. Additional speakers at the event were Gabrielle Rosner-Bloch and Catherine Trautmann, who shared insights into the cultural significance of this heritage in contemporary society.
