Celebrating Cultural Heritage at Republic Day Parade
As the Republic Day approaches, preparations for the grand parade at Kartavya Path on January 26 are in full swing. The event will showcase an exciting array of 18 marching contingents, 15 bands, and vibrant tableaux representing 31 states, union territories, ministries, and the armed forces, all aimed at highlighting India’s rich cultural heritage.
Andhra Pradesh returns for the third year with its tableau themed “Etikoppaka Bommalu — Eco-Friendly Wooden Toys,” which features a striking 14-foot Vinayaka figure alongside local artisans at work. “The tableau is adorned with Etikoppaka bells, rangoli, and figures like Raju and Rani,” shared Kiran Kumar from the state information department. The tableau symbolizes both artistry and tradition with a live demonstration from 18 artists.
Uttarakhand plans to present a tableau that intertwines culture and adventure with the theme “Cultural Heritage and Adventure Sports.” It will begin with Aipan art, showcasing its social significance. “Our tableau aims to highlight Uttarakhand not only as a spiritual hub but also as a destination for adventure,” clarified nodal officer KS Chauhan, emphasizing the state’s thrilling tourism offerings.
Bihar’s tableau reflects its significant contributions to knowledge and peace, featuring cultural landmarks like the Ghora Katora statue of Buddha and Nalanda University. An official noted that it aims to underline the state’s commitment to cultural and educational heritage on an international scale.
Jharkhand’s display will weave together elements of cultural progress, including tributes to the late Ratan Tata. “Our tableau will spotlight Jharkhand’s traditional dances and women’s growing role in education,” said Abhay Kumar, emphasizing the importance of gender equality in the state’s development.
Additional states participating include Goa, Karnataka, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and more, all contributing to the diverse tapestry of India. The Ministry of Defence has adopted the theme “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas,” celebrating India’s cultural evolution over the last 75 years. Notably, the Union Ministry for Women and Child Development returns after a decade with a tableau focused on women-driven development initiatives, coinciding with two significant anniversaries.
In a historic first, the India Meteorological Department will unveil its tableau to mark its 150th anniversary, showcasing advancements in weather forecasting. “We will highlight critical achievements in cyclone prediction and rainfall forecasts,” stated IMD director general M Mohapatra, showcasing how far the department has come in serving the nation.
