US and Chinese Students Strengthen Ties Through Immersive Cultural Program

In August, over 70 students from prestigious US universities participated in a cultural immersion program in Jiangsu, China, designed to foster connections and understanding between American and Chinese youth. Dianahy Valentin, also from Duke, found herself captivated by Suzhou’s unique urban planning and the strategy behind preserving its historical charm amidst contemporary growth. “It highlights the importance of not being too hasty in their pursuit of exponential growth, and instead incorporating sustainable practices into their development,” she reflected. The program’s closing ceremony brought forth an empowering message from John Quelch, Duke Kunshan University’s executive vice chancellor, urging students to embrace their experiences as catalysts for nurturing the US-China relationship. Likewise, Alec Gallimore, Duke’s provost, encouraged the students through a heartfelt video message that wished for their journey to challenge assumptions and deepen their global understanding.
