The Dunhuang Forum reinforced Gansu’s commitment to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage through a collaborative dialogue involving experts from various countries. Key discussions revolved around innovative practices, community engagement, and the integral role of ICH in promoting sustainable development. Notable speakers emphasized cultural confidence and the importance of international cooperation in preserving our shared heritage.

In a vibrant celebration of culture, the Dunhuang Forum came alive with discussions and innovations aimed at preserving the intangible cultural heritage (ICH). This important event, hosted under the auspices of the 7th Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo, drew together a medley of 64 cultural scholars, government officials, and community leaders from over 10 countries. Their united goal was to address the urgent need for safeguarding ICH amidst the shifting tides of our global landscape.  Chaired by Mr. He Xiaozu, the Director of the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the forum emphasized Dunhuang’s pivotal role in fostering cultural dialogue and heritage preservation. Notable figures such as Ms. Zhang Yongxia from the CPC Gansu Committee and Professor Shahbaz Khan from UNESCO graced the occasion with their insightful remarks, highlighting ICH as a vital element of cultural diversity and sustainable development. Mr. Wang Xiaofeng, President of the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Association, passionately conveyed that ICH symbolizes the essence of Chinese civilization, promoting cultural confidence and national unity. While Dr. Duong Bich Hanh, representing UNESCO, illuminated how ICH can fuel social inclusiveness and serve as a vehicle for economic and environmental growth, emphasizing multi-sectoral cooperation in the safeguarding endeavors.

The Dunhuang Forum, a confluence of minds and hearts, emerged from the increasing recognition of the importance of intangible cultural heritage in enriching societal identities and fostering cultural continuity. In a world where shared heritage faces threats from modernization, globalization, and environmental change, the need to safeguard these fragile legacies has never been more pressing. Gansu Province has taken on this noble mantle, positioning itself as a beacon of cultural preservation amidst rapid change, aided by collaborations with international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Bank. This forum not only showcased Gansu’s commitment but also served as a hub for innovative ideas and collective action. In recent years, various globally recognized initiatives, like the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of ICH, have paved the way for structured international cooperation, further nurturing the understanding that cultural heritage is not just a relic of the past but a living, evolving testament to human creativity and resilience.

The Dunhuang Forum stands as a testament to Gansu Province’s dedication to preserving intangible cultural heritage. Its resounding success reflected a rich tapestry of collaboration among cultural experts and international organizations who echoed the call for innovative measures to protect our shared legacies. Through the engagement of communities and stakeholders, the forum not only illuminated paths for sustainable development but also fostered a renewed sense of collective responsibility to safeguard our diverse cultural heritages. As the participants took their leave, the hope was palpable that the bonds forged there would sow the seeds for lasting international cooperation aimed at nurturing the vibrant mosaic of human culture.
