On 15th April 2025, the Cultural Palace in Sharjah hosted an enlightening workshop on contemporary poetic rhetorical techniques, marking the second day of the 28th Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity (SAAC). This gathering attracted a diverse assembly of Arab scholars, critics, and poets, all eager to delve into the complexities of modern poetry.
The workshop was structured into two distinct sessions. The first showcased academic and critical discussions where esteemed scholars shared their insights. Dr. Nabila Qutb Rushdi presented her thought-provoking paper, “The Rhetoric of Contemporary Arabic Poetry Writing,” shedding light on the philosophical symbolism and introspective nature of modernist poetry.
Dr. Marwa Diab Al-Hayji followed with her work, “Rhetorical Techniques in Contemporary Poetics”, highlighting the significance of intertextuality and the internal rhythm that breathes new life into poetic expression. Meanwhile, Dr. Fatima Abdul Hamid Mohamed Ali’s paper, “New Techniques in the Modernist Poem,” examined innovations like departing from traditional metre and the infusion of organic language that captivates with its sensory richness.
Researcher Taha Hussein Mahmoud (Al-Aswani) offered a comparative analysis with his paper, “The Rhetoric of Modern Poetry: Free Verse and Prose Poetry.” He explored the unique rhetorical attributes of both forms, including their rhythm, imagery, and symbolic depth, providing a richer understanding of their differences.
The event also featured a vibrant poetry reading session, allowing Arab poets to share a selection of works that blended authenticity with modern innovation. This celebration of poetic expression demonstrated the award’s commitment to enriching the Arab cultural scene and nurturing contemporary literature.
Mohammed Al Qusair, Director of Cultural Affairs and Secretary-General of the award, noted the award’s contribution to the Arab literary library, enriching it with a variety of genres, from poetry to theatre, encapsulating the voice of a vibrant new generation of writers. He confirmed that many winning and noteworthy entries have been published, serving as valuable resources for scholars and critics in the Arab literary community.
