In a decisive move, the Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called on all International Federations to either relocate or cancel any forthcoming sports events planned in Russia or Belarus. This action stems from the IOC’s firm condemnation of the breach of the Olympic Truce, which was violated by both nations amidst their political actions. The UN resolution affirming the Olympic Truce was adopted unanimously on 2 December 2021, aiming to promote peace during the Olympic Games that commenced in February 2022.
The IOC EB has stressed that the safety and security of athletes must take precedence in these situations. Although the IOC has no upcoming events slated in either Russia or Belarus, it emphasised that all federations should heed the breach of the Truce. Furthermore, they have mandated that the national flags of Russia and Belarus are not to be displayed, nor their anthems played at international events, unless they are already addressed by WADA sanctions against Russia.
In a show of support for the upcoming Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing, the IOC EB reassured its backing for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Additionally, the IOC EB conveyed profound concerns regarding the welfare of Olympic Community members in Ukraine, expressing solidarity amidst ongoing turmoil. Coordinating humanitarian assistance, a special IOC task force remains in touch with the Olympic Community within Ukraine.
The IOC EB has directed this task force to monitor conditions closely and keep the board apprised of developments, including any necessary revisions to today’s resolutions. This latest statement builds upon an earlier announcement detailing the IOC’s broader stance on these pressing issues.
