Lilly Schuster, a talented mid-distance runner from Berlin, Germany, is making waves in the ULM track and field team. During her debut year, she achieved remarkable personal bests, clocking in at 19:33.7 in the 5k and 4:58.02 in the mile, both during the Sun Belt Conference Championships. A freshman toxicology major, she showcases her flair especially in the 800m and 1500m events with great promise.
Schuster’s running journey began at the age of thirteen when a teacher recognised her innate talent. “I started whenever I was about 13,” she recalled, expressing how joining a running club was pivotal. As her abilities flourished, she realised distance running was her forte, stating, “we figured out pretty soon that I’m not really good at jumping and throwing, so we started specializing in running.”
Despite the prestige of joining the ULM program, which boasts 16 national championships and three Olympians, Schuster faced challenges. The transition from Germany’s disconnected academic and athletic structure to the integrated system in the U.S. proved tough. “Back home, we have university and then we have sports; they’re not well connected like they are here [in the US],” she explained.
Throughout her journey, Schuster displayed remarkable discipline and resilience, thanks to her supportive family and her idol, mid-distance runner Majtie Kolberg. “My parents have definitely uplifted me; especially my dad. I love how he supports me and the way he goes about things in general,” she shared, alongside admiration for Kolberg’s effortless style on the track.
As she forges ahead at ULM, Schuster aspires to achieve even greater heights, aiming to break school records in the 1500m.
