The increasing number of anti-trans legislation, like the 574 bills tracked by the ACLU, exemplifies the urgent need for protective measures that address both online and offline threats faced by these communities.
Research at the University of Virginia’s Digital Technology for Democracy Lab reveals a vital intersection between digital technology, rights, and gender identity. While the digital realm offers platforms for community support and knowledge-sharing, it simultaneously harbours threats such as online gender-based violence, harassment, and the misuse of biometric data. These challenges affect not only individual expression but also the collective safety of gender-diverse individuals.
The newly proposed Trans Digital Rights (TDR) framework seeks to bridge the gap in current digital rights debates by focusing on the unique needs of adults in gender-diverse communities. This framework outlines twelve guiding principles, including enhancing the right to be forgotten regarding gender identity, establishing responsible data collection practices, and implementing user-directed content moderation policies that discourage online discrimination.
