The alarm bells ring for the civilians around El Fasher, Sudan, as reports surface of new assaults by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Zamzam displacement camp, housing over half a million internally displaced individuals. These vulnerable souls have fled the storm of violence and brutality in Darfur, only to find their refuge threatened once more.
In the wake of these hostilities, scores of civilians have streamed into Tawila, a town 60 kilometres away, arriving with emaciated bodies and parched throats, recounting the dismal conditions within Zamzam that have turned into unbearable hells. The RSF’s relentless siege, in place since May 2024, has cut off vital supplies and subjected populated areas to relentless shelling, while the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) seem to have done little to shield civilians from harm amid fierce clashes.
Having previously targeted the Zamzam camp in February 2025, the RSF left devastation in their wake, destroying crucial civilian infrastructure. Although many lived in fear of famine, they had been largely insulated from direct conflict until now; however, the latest strikes have compelled essential aid groups, including Médecins Sans Frontières and the World Food Programme, to cease operations, leaving many on the brink of starvation.
With ominous signs of an impending large-scale attack surfacing, Abdel Raheem Dagalo, deputy RSF leader, was recently captured on film rallying troops in El Fasher. On April 10, shelling also struck El Fasher’s Abu Shouk camp, resulting in the loss of countless lives, including those of innocent children.
Warnings echo from past tragedies, recalling the RSF’s brutal massacre in the Ardamata suburb of El Geneina, which claimed numerous civilian lives in late 2023 following similar threatening signals. The UN Security Council’s resolution in June 2024 condemned the RSF’s siege and urged all factions to protect civilians and facilitate safe humanitarian access, yet the RSF remains unyielding to these pleas.
The potential for catastrophic consequences looms large over the civilian populace; time is of the essence, and global leaders must take decisive action. The UN Security Council must convene swiftly, addressing the crisis through measures such as imposing sanctions on abusive leaders and condemning nations that offer support to those breaching the UN arms embargo.
Civilians in El Fasher, Sudan, face renewed threats as the RSF attacks the Zamzam displacement camp, home to over half a million displaced individuals. With aid groups halting services due to violence, global leaders are urged to act swiftly. Reports indicate a significant impending attack, and the UN Security Council’s intervention is necessary to protect civilians and impose sanctions on offending leaders.
The dangerous situation for civilians near El Fasher, Sudan, calls for immediate intervention by global leaders amidst fresh attacks on the Zamzam displacement camp by the RSF. With humanitarian aid suspended and threats of large-scale violence on the rise, decisive actions from the UN Security Council are crucial to protect vulnerable populations and enforce sanctions against those perpetuating violence.
