Celebrating Fatou: The World’s Oldest Gorilla Turns 68 in Berlin

At the Berlin zoo, Fatou, the globe’s oldest captive gorilla, is preparing for a grand celebration of her 68th birthday. In an early celebration, the zoo staff presented her with a delightful basket brimming with soft fruits and vegetables, crafted for her comfort given she has no teeth. Born in 1957, Fatou made her entrance to the zoo in 1959, and since then has been a cherished inhabitant.

As a unique resident, Fatou enjoys her own specially designed enclosure, separated from five other lively gorillas, who range in age from 4 to 39. This arrangement allows her to enjoy the tranquility befitting her advanced years. Vet André Schüle emphasised, “Fatou gets the best possible care here,” indicating the dedication put into her wellbeing.

Fatou was honoured as the zoo’s oldest resident last year, succeeding Ingo, the flamingo who lived to an impressive age of at least 75, having been a fixture at the zoo since 1955. Her legacy and special care ensure that this venerable gorilla continues to thrive in her golden years at the Berlin zoo.

Fatou, the oldest gorilla in captivity, is celebrating her 68th birthday at the Berlin zoo. Born in 1957, she enjoys a comfortable life with specially prepared food due to her age. Currently separated from younger gorillas, she finds peace in her enclosure. Fatou became the zoo’s oldest resident last year following the death of a long-lived flamingo.

Fatou’s 68th birthday celebration highlights the special care and respect afforded to her as the oldest captive gorilla. With dedicated staff ensuring her comfort and peace, she stands as a testament to the longevity and care of wildlife in captivity. As the Berlin zoo’s cherished resident, Fatou reminds us of the intricate bonds we share with these remarkable creatures.
