On April 9, 2025, the Student Health Advisory Board at Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) orchestrated a vibrant Wellness Day, brimming with health-related activities for students to explore. The event was organised across four time blocks, culminating in an exhilarating assembly and a fat tire bicycle competition in the gym, highlighting the spirit of community engagement in health and wellness.
As the sun slipped over the horizon, the school’s hallways buzzed with anticipation as students conversed excitedly, clutching their schedules. A myriad of activities awaited them: police-led self-defense classes, Tai Chi sessions guided by Kristina Vierney and Adriana Depalma from LincolnHealth Education, and nutrition workshops hosted by health coach Julie Mitchell. They could also delve into Healthy Relationship Jeopardy with Karissa Walter and engage their creative sides in crocheting, rock painting, and outdoor crafts facilitated by local artisans.
Yet, the event’s true stars were undoubtedly the animals. Newagen Alpaca Farm delighted students with friendly alpacas for them to walk and pet. Additionally, Deputy Sam Alexander introduced Zeke, a 40-pound black lab in training, who has already showcased remarkable tracking skills. Deputy Alexander elaborated on Zeke’s training techniques, captivating the students with insights into canine tracking.
The afternoon sessions were equally exciting, offering basketball, tennis, weight lifting, and yoga, where students practised sun salutations, welcoming a mindset of openness and wellness. They savoured health-focused cooking classes, crafting egg rolls and quinoa with spicy peanut sauce, all while also creating Zen Doodles with guided pebble art.
To spice up the day, raffle prizes awaited those who brought donations for the school snack pantry or participated in a phone-free challenge promoting mental health awareness.
Mindy Labrecque from the school Health Center emphasised the collaborative nature of Wellness Day, highlighting its resurrection post-COVID-19, thanks to Ariel Alamo’s efforts.
The day concluded with a thrilling fat tire bicycle competition. Victory went to Thomas Hennessey and Christopher Liberti, who impressively outperformed previous champion Kristen Hanley in the quest for the slowest finisher who maintained lane discipline.
