Colt Data Centre Services (DCS) is taking a significant leap in its German expansion by unveiling plans to develop four new data centres in Frankfurt and Berlin. This ambitious project, marked by an investment of €2 billion, promises to add an impressive 117MW to the company’s capacity, raising its total in Germany to 176MW. The facilities will include two data centres in Frankfurt, utilising an 18-acre site for a total of 63MW, and two in Berlin on a 9.5-acre site, providing 54MW.
The expected completion of the first phases involves bringing Frankfurt 4 and Berlin 1 online by the end of 2028, with renewable energy contracts already established. Colt DCS’s strategic move not only solidifies its presence in Frankfurt, Europe’s data centre stronghold, but also taps into Berlin’s growing market, responding to the increasing demand driven by Germany’s digital transformation.
Designed in accordance with Colt DCS’ Global Reference Design (GRD), these centres will efficiently handle both cloud computing and high-performance workloads, accommodating racks up to 130kW. To ensure environmental sustainability, the design incorporates various eco-friendly features, such as low Global Warming Potential cooling systems, reduced water waste strategies, and minimal use of steel and concrete. Each site will aim to reuse waste heat for district heating, while a fifth of the sites will be landscaped as green spaces, adorned with solar panels and vegetation on the roofs.
Local dignitaries have acknowledged this development’s significance. Gert-Uwe Mende, Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden, expressed enthusiasm for Colt DCS’s choice of location, viewing it as a beacon for business and artificial intelligence in the region. Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Germany’s economy by expanding operations to meet the escalating needs of cloud and AI technologies while embracing sustainability as a core value.
