Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) is expanding its reach in Germany, adding an impressive 117MW of power through the acquisition of land and securing power supply contracts for new data centres in Frankfurt and Berlin. The four planned facilities include Frankfurt 4 & 5 and Berlin 1 & 2, with the Frankfurt centres set on an 18-acre site to deliver 63MW and the Berlin sites on 9.5 acres providing a total of 54MW.
Anticipated to be operational by late 2028, the first phases in Frankfurt and Berlin will harness renewable energy sources, with contracts already in place. This expansion will elevate Colt DCS’s total capacity in Germany to 176MW and underscores the company’s €2 billion investment commitment, bolstering its presence in Frankfurt, a key data centre hub in Europe, as well as tapping into Berlin’s rising importance in the digital landscape.
Designed based on Colt DCS’s Global Reference Design, these facilities will cater to both traditional cloud and high-performance computing workloads, powering racks up to 130kW. To optimise sustainability, approaches for cooling will include traditional air, direct liquid-to-chip, and hybrid systems, all while adhering to environmental policies centred on low carbon principles and minimal material usage in construction.
Local councils will benefit from the waste heat produced, utilising it for district heating, whilst 20% of site areas will be maintained as green space. The roofs of these establishments will integrate solar panels and vegetation to enhance eco-friendliness. Gert-Uwe Mende, Wiesbaden’s Lord Mayor, emphasised his delight in Colt DCS selecting the capital of Hessen for this innovative venture.
Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS, noted that the demand for hyperscale data centres reflects the growing digital services landscape in Germany. The projects are a commitment to local growth and underline Colt DCS’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. With over 25 years of experience, Colt DCS aims to be the most trusted partner in data centre operations while prioritising environmental responsibility and sustainable development as vital strategic elements.
Colt DCS is expanding its operations in Germany with the addition of 117MW capacity through new data centres in Frankfurt and Berlin. The facilities, projected for readiness by 2028, will support various computing workloads and adhere to sustainable practices. This expansion signifies a €2 billion investment, showcasing Colt DCS’s commitment to the German digital infrastructure, while integrating environmental considerations.
In summary, Colt DCS’s strategic expansion in Germany through four new data centres serves to enhance its capacity significantly.
