Amidst the backdrop of ongoing human rights concerns, Hyundai, the South Korean automotive giant, faces accusations of complicity in unwarranted demolitions of Palestinian homes. Allegations suggest that Israeli forces have utilised Hyundai Construction Equipment (Hyundai CE) machinery for these demolitions in the occupied West Bank, a practice that has uprooted many Palestinian families and breached international law.
As a result of these actions, Hyundai has landed on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement’s radar, focusing their efforts on urging a suspension of Hyundai CE’s operations in Israel, advocating for protective measures ensuring their machinery does not facilitate human rights violations. Activist groups, including Amnesty International, have documented the repercussions of these demolitions, stating that about 250 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced as a result.
In March 2023, Hyundai CE rebutted the claims, asserting that they have no involvement in Israeli settlement activities. However, their failure to elaborate on their human rights due diligence has left many questioning the validity of this assurance. Despite their denials, a plethora of social media footage continues to highlight Hyundai machinery in demolishing Palestinian homes, escalating scrutiny towards the company’s operations.
On March 27, Montse Ferrer from Amnesty International stressed the dire consequences of these demolitions, arguing they are instrumental in upholding a system of apartheid. She called for urgent actions, demanding that “it is imperative that HD Hyundai takes decisive action to immediately suspend distribution of its products in Israel,” reinforcing the need for stringent human rights diligence that aligns with international norms.
Hyundai is facing criticism over allegations of complicity in the demolition of Palestinian homes by Israeli forces using its machinery.
