Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has unveiled plans to establish four new data centres in Germany, set to enhance its operational capacity by an impressive 117MW. The upcoming facilities include Frankfurt 4 and 5, along with Berlin 1 and 2, with the Frankfurt sites occupying an expansive 18 acres and providing a total of 63MW. Meanwhile, the Berlin data centres will be built on 9.5 acres, delivering an additional 54MW. Colt DCS is aiming for the first phases of these sites to be operational by the end of 2028, backed by secured renewable power contracts.
This ambitious expansion reflects Colt DCS’ steadfast commitment to bolstering digital infrastructure in Germany, investing a remarkable €2 billion into the local economy. It firmly cements their presence in the Frankfurt market, a leading European data centre hub, while also recognising Berlin as a burgeoning secondary market driven by the demand for cloud and AI services amid Germany’s digital transformation.
The new centres will adhere to Colt DCS’ Global Reference Design, optimised for both traditional cloud and high-performance computing needs, supporting racks with a capacity of up to 130kW. Innovative cooling solutions will be employed, including air-based, direct liquid-to-chip, and hybrid methods, ensuring versatility and efficiency.
In alignment with sustainability goals, each facility will be constructed using low embodied carbon principles. Measures include low Global Warming Potential (GWP) cooling solutions, decreased water waste, and minimised use of steel and concrete in construction. Furthermore, waste heat generated will be utilised by local councils for district heating, and one-fifth of the site will be designated as green space, with photovoltaic solar panels adorning the roofs alongside vegetation.
Local dignitaries, like Gert-Uwe Mende, Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden, expressed enthusiasm for Colt DCS’ decision to establish operations in the region.
