Colt DCS Expands German Data Centre Capacity by 117MW with New Facilities

Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) has unveiled ambitious plans to develop four state-of-the-art data centres in Germany, positioning itself as a pivotal player in the country’s digital landscape. The two facilities in Frankfurt will occupy an 18-acre site, delivering a substantial 63MW, while the Berlin centres will provide 54MW from a 9.5-acre site. Completion of initial phases is targeted for the end of 2028, and renewable power contracts have already been procured.

This expansion signifies a remarkable €2 billion investment, bolstering Colt DCS’s total capacity in Germany to 176MW. Frankfurt remains a dominant hub in Europe for data centres, while Berlin is rapidly evolving as a secondary market amid a surge in demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence, reflecting Germany’s digital transformation.

The new facilities will adhere to Colt DCS’s Global Reference Design (GRD), catering to both traditional cloud environments and high-performance computing workloads, with racks capable of handling up to 130kW. Innovative cooling methods, including traditional air and hybrid approaches, will be employed to enhance performance.

Incorporating eco-friendly practices, each centre will utilise low Global Warming Potential (GWP) chillers, prioritise water conservation, and minimise the use of steel and concrete. Furthermore, heat generated will be reused for district heating, and 20% of the area will be designated as green space adorned with solar panels and vegetation.

Officials praised the initiative, with Wiesbaden’s Lord Mayor expressing pride in the choice of location, underscoring the potential of artificial intelligence. CEO Niclas Sanfridsson noted the burgeoning demand for hyperscale facilities in Germany and committed to sustainability alongside capacity enhancement, reinforcing Colt DCS’s role as a trusted partner in meeting global demands.

Colt DCS announces plans to develop four new data centres in Germany, boosting capacity by 117MW. The investment of €2 billion will establish facilities in Frankfurt and Berlin, aiming for completion by late 2028. Focused on sustainability, the centres will employ eco-friendly designs and innovative cooling methods. This expansion solidifies Colt DCS’s presence in Europe’s digital infrastructure landscape.

Colt DCS’s strategic expansion in Germany underscores its commitment to addressing the growing demands for data centres driven by digital transformation, cloud services, and AI. With a substantial financial investment and a robust focus on sustainability, the planned facilities in Frankfurt and Berlin will significantly enhance operational capacity while contributing positively to the local economy. Colt DCS stands to reinforce its market position as a leader in eco-friendly and technologically advanced data centre solutions.
