In a virtual event titled “Women Who Shaped the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Gertrude Mongella expressed the view that although progress has been made, there remains a significant journey ahead. Hosted by the United Nations Academic Impact and other departments, this discourse occurred on 20 March during the 69th Commission on the Status of Women, shedding light on the women who were pivotal in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Opening remarks came from Ilze Brands Kehris, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Human Rights Office, and Nanette Braun, Director of Campaigns and Country Operations Division. They celebrated the thirty years since the Beijing Declaration while acknowledging ongoing challenges that still confront gender equality efforts.
Esteemed panelists included Mongella, Anna Fierst—descendant of Eleanor Roosevelt, and Drs. Rebecca Adami and Manu Bhagavan. Their insights resonated with Mongella’s message and echoed Eleanor Roosevelt’s wisdom on human rights beginning “in small places, close to home.”
The event’s success is attributed to these remarkable speakers who emphasised that while significant work lies ahead, history assures us that progress is achievable, equipping communities to advance further. The UNAI and UNAI SDG Hubs remain dedicated to promoting SDG 5: Gender Equality, highlighting their efforts through the leadership of their SDG 5 Hub Chair, CHRIST (Deemed to Be University).
