Voices for Justice, a fresh student organisation at Grand Valley State University, has embarked on a mission to amplify social causes and establish a significant campus presence. Weekly gatherings at the Russel H. Kirkhof Center foster discussions about current issues impacting GVSU students while promoting a vibrant community atmosphere. Members explore local volunteering and fundraising opportunities, creating a supportive network where thoughts and ideas can flourish.
Gabrielle Salinas, the president of Voices for Justice, eloquently shares, “This organisation prioritises and expresses the importance of human rights. We focus on what we can do for others and how we can make a difference. Everyone here is compassionate, positive and supportive.”
Recently, the group volunteered with the Chicago Refugee Coalition, assisting refugees by providing vital supplies such as clothing, toiletries, and food, as vice president Chloe Ward explains: “We supported families in desperate need of essential products.”
Voices for Justice also enriches student life through thought-provoking film screenings. In February, they showcased “42: The Jackie Robinson Story” to spotlight the legendary athlete’s influence and celebrate Black excellence. Following this, they screened “Hidden Figures,” a film illustrating the contributions of female mathematicians at NASA during the 1960s. Discussions post-screening allowed attendees to engage with critical themes around identity and discrimination.
Salinas noted, “A major takeaway is the portrayal of racial and gender barriers. The film sparked conversations about the progress made towards equality, while emphasising the work still left to do across various sectors.”
The club plans to host more film events to stimulate awareness among students, providing a platform for dialogue on complex subjects. Their upcoming Thrift Swap on April 7 at the Kirkhof Lawn invites students to exchange unwanted clothing, further promoting their values and encouraging new membership. “You can swap items you no longer need for something fresh,” Ward explains, highlighting their ticket system for exchanging goods.
In their quest to advocate for human rights, Voices for Justice aims to connect with a broader audience, spreading messages of humanity, equity, and solidarity while raising awareness of local and global issues impacting students every day.
