Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Sharon Graham highlights the need to share these resources with the community. Scheduled for Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 208 W. Elm St., Gladstone, the fair welcomes everyone, not just local residents.
The fair aims to create a welcoming atmosphere for individuals seeking information on health services. Certified community health worker Karen Cole notes, “Many people do not know until they absolutely need them where to go to look for services.” A complimentary walking breakfast will be provided to attendees, further encouraging participation.
Featuring intriguing presentations, Julie Meloan Bell from the Family Outreach Community Center will share her breast cancer experience. Cole praises Bell as a humorous and impactful speaker, emphasising the importance of relatable sharing in overcoming fears regarding such diagnoses. Breast cancer remains a significant health issue, with startling statistics from Cole about its prevalence among women.
Attendees can engage in numerous activities, including:
– Meet-and-greets with local health providers.
– Presentations on stroke prevention, warning signs of breast cancer, and dementia.
– Demonstrations of adaptive equipment for Parkinson’s disease and stroke recovery.
– Free blood type and hemoglobin screenings, oral and skin cancer tests, and Narcan boxes.
– Opportunities to win exercise and wellness prizes, plus try out exercise equipment available for public use.
Cole describes the health department’s facilities as a “hidden gem” within Henderson County, with hundreds visiting for free exercise weekly. Additionally, the fair will showcase therapy dogs and the Pink Heals Pink Ambulance of Western Illinois, enhancing its community focus. The event is supported by the Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure Grant and the Henderson County Health Department.
