On April 16, Richmond will host a celebratory day of free film screenings at the Richmond Cultural Centre in honour of National Canadian Film Day. Yun-Jou Chang, the executive director of Cinevolution, reflects on this inquiry, expressing its profound significance on both spiritual and earthly levels.
The event features an array of stunning narratives that invite viewers into diverse experiences. The screenings kick off with the award-winning film Bergers by Sophie Deraspe, which depicts a weary Montrealer who escapes urban life for the pastoral beauty of shepherding in the French Alps. Following this is Cielo, a tranquil documentary by Alison McAlpine, highlighting the reverence of scientists and local dreamers towards the night sky in the Atacama Desert—a film praised by Esquire and The Guardian as one of the top documentaries of 2018.
Capping off the day is In another place, not here, a curated short film presentation by Vancouver’s Yani Kong, whose work challenges perceptions of our world and our relationship with the cosmos.
