VDV President Ingo Wortmann emphasised the importance of collective transformation in road mobility during his opening remarks. “These days, we are holding the debates in Germany that will shape the mobility of the future. Public transport is not a luxury; it is a central public service, and it heavily relies on reliability, funding, and skilled labour,” he stated. The event has evolved into a significant industry convention.
Furthermore, Wortmann noted the challenges faced due to dwindling budget funds amid an intense competition for allocation. He asserted the necessity for reliable long-term solutions, especially as transport companies lead the charge towards eco-friendly mobility. “The current change is profound. It cannot be managed without a clear perspective,” he cautioned.
The pursuit of autonomous driving technology is critical, with the VDV advocating for focus on SAE Level 4 capabilities. Wortmann called for governmental support to foster an international lead market for automated shuttles, made in Germany. This approach aims not only to enhance public transport but also to respond to the skilled labour shortage.
Every investment in autonomous public transport fleets presents opportunities for the German vehicle industry, fostering expertise and production capacities. “We see public transport as the key driver of innovation for autonomous driving in Germany,” Wortmann concluded, solidifying the connection between public transport advancements and the automotive sector’s future growth.
