The report detailed arrests warranting bounties on six overseas democracy activists on Christmas Eve 2024, alongside the cancellation of passports for seven others. Among the targeted individuals were British National Overseas passport holders residing in the UK and dissidents attempting to find refuge in the United States. Overall, there are currently 19 pro-democracy activists listed as wanted by Hong Kong authorities, each with attached bounties for their alleged national security crimes.
Further, the report reveals that in the past year, the Hong Kong authorities have aggressively pursued activists and media representatives, including Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily. Critics argue that the charges against Lai are politically motivated and intended to suppress dissent.
The newly imposed sanctions specifically target six key individuals involved in law enforcement, including Sonny Chi Kwong Au and Dong Jingwei, both prominent figures on the Committee for Safeguarding National Security. Others include police commissioners and the secretary of justice, who are implicated in the enforcement of the National Security Law. These sanctions freeze their assets in the U.S. and prohibit American citizens from engaging in business dealings with them.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the sanctions serve as a clear message against those undermining the autonomy of Hong Kong and infringing upon the freedoms of its citizens. Furthermore, he emphasised that these actions highlight Beijing’s disregard for its commitments to the people of Hong Kong. From its handover to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, critics maintain that Hong Kong’s promised autonomy has been systematically eroded.
In addition to these sanctions, the U.S. enacted visa restrictions on certain Chinese officials due to Beijing’s lack of cooperation allowing U.S. diplomats and journalists access to Tibet. The UPI agency has reached out to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. for a response regarding these developments.
