In a significant cultural recognition, Odisha’s renowned Rath Yatra and Bali Yatra have entered the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage, as announced by the Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi. This prestigious listing by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s leading cultural institution under the Ministry of Culture, marks a proud milestone for the state.
Majhi expressed his joy on social media, stating, “Delighted that Ratha Jatra & Bali Jatra, symbols of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, have been listed… This is a proud moment for every Odia.” He noted this achievement as a stepping stone towards international recognition from UNESCO.
The heritage body has ranked Bali Yatra at number 45 and Rath Yatra at number 54. The Rath Yatra in Puri, an annual procession of Lord Jagannath and his siblings from their 12th-century temple to Shree Gundicha Temple, draws millions of devotees worldwide each year. Meanwhile, Bali Yatra, originating in Cuttack, celebrates Odisha’s maritime heritage, marking ancient trade ties with regions like Bali. It unfolds over a week, beginning on ‘Kartika Purnima’, pulling countless visitors to the stunning banks of the Mahanadi River.
