An in-depth analysis of nearly 34,000 Reddit comments reveals that the tech community holds stronger polarized views on artificial intelligence (AI) compared to the general public. This study, led by Jiebo Luo from the University of Rochester, utilised natural language processing to dissect sentiments in discussions from 388 diverse subreddits following the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The findings are documented in the journal Telematics and Informatics.
Researchers scrutinised discussions on both tech-focused subreddits like “r/singularity” and more general ones like “r/futurology.” Key topics included AI’s consciousness, business applications, and its social ramifications. While conversations in non-tech communities often framed AI as a beneficial tool for societal progress, the tech community exhibited pronounced divisions in opinion.
According to Luo, “The tech community’s opinions were either strongly positive or strongly negative, more so than the non-tech community.” This polarization can be attributed to the commenters’ depth of knowledge on the subject, a phenomenon also echoed among tech influencers like Geoffrey Hinton, who expresses a pessimistic outlook, contrasted with the optimism of figures such as Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.
While non-tech discussions frequently highlighted social issues like job displacement, tech-centric dialogues exhibited profound opinions on productivity enhancements and ethical considerations surrounding AI. Hanjia Lyu, a PhD candidate involved in the study, stated, “Members of the tech community say it can help improve productivity… Some concerns relate to ethical implications and potential societal impacts.”
The stark differences in perspectives underscore the urgency for clearer communication about AI. The authors advocate for policymakers, developers, and educators to create accessible explanations to dispel misconceptions surrounding AI technologies and their broader implications for society.
