Join the Fun: Volunteer for the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend

The annual Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend, presented by WVU Medicine, thrives on the passion of its volunteers. Joe Lovell, special projects coordinator, emphasises the pivotal role they play: “We wouldn’t be able to do this without our sponsors or our volunteers.” This year, organisers are on the hunt for more helping hands to support the two-day event scheduled for May 24-25 in downtown Wheeling.

The weekend is a vibrant tapestry of events that challenges participants and creates opportunities for volunteers. Kicking off on Saturday, May 24, the weekend features the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic with races starting from 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Followed by the 5K Run/Walk at 7:45 a.m., younger athletes can showcase their skills in the one-mile Ogden Fun Run at 8:30 a.m., and the Tiny Tot Trot at 10:30 a.m. Pets will also strut their stuff in Rovers on the River at noon.

Sunday, May 25, continues the excitement with the Wheeling Heritage Trail Bicycle Tour, featuring a 100 km ride at 7:30 a.m. and shorter distances at 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The Tough As Nails Urban Challenge will challenge contestants at noon, adding to the weekend’s thrill.

Ohio Valley residents are encouraged to jump in as volunteers, helping with everything from handing out medals to assisting with animal events. Lovell reassures potential volunteers that every helping hand counts, saying, “Whether it’s a small group or individuals, we’ll find a place for them to help.”

This event is a thriving hub for civic groups and students seeking community service hours. Lovell clarifies, “We’re not just looking for a group of 30 people; it could be just five or six.” The joy of contributing during this highlight of the Ohio Valley summer is both rewarding and meaningful for volunteers.

Jim Spanner, general manager of The Intelligencer, echoes these sentiments, stating that volunteers truly enhance the event: “It’s the people who volunteer their time that make this weekend so special each year.” He urges more local residents to take up the call and enrich the experience of attendees.

The Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend, scheduled for May 24-25, seeks more volunteers to support the various events including marathons, walks, and challenges.
