UN Calls for Investigation into Assault on Sahrawi Activist Mahfouda Bamba Lafkir

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders urgently urged the Moroccan government to initiate a thorough investigation into the brutal assault experienced by Mahfouda Bamba Lafkir. Mahfouda, a former detainee and outspoken activist, is the President of the Sahrawi Committee of Dismissed Workers and Employees. This distressing incident unfolded on March 16, in Smara Street, located within the occupied city of El Aaiún.

In response, the Committee of Dismissed Workers and Employees expressed appreciation for the UN special rapporteur’s intervention. They also appealed to all UN mechanisms for swift action to address the persistent human rights abuses occurring in occupied Western Sahara.

Furthermore, the committee urges the UN Human Rights Commission to advocate for the territory’s accessibility to international observers and press. This action aims to dismantle the blockade that envelops the region, thus shedding light on the severe violations perpetrated daily against the Sahrawi people by Moroccan forces.

The UN Human Rights Rapporteur has requested Morocco to investigate the assault on activist Mahfouda Bamba Lafkir, who was attacked in El Aaiún. The Sahrawi Committee supports this appeal and urges the UN for intervention to address human rights violations in the occupied territories.

In summary, the UN Special Rapporteur’s call for investigation into the assault of Mahfouda Bamba Lafkir highlights a critical need for accountability regarding human rights violations in Western Sahara. The Sahrawi Committee’s plea for international oversight underscores the ongoing struggles faced by Sahrawis under Moroccan rule, promoting a collective demand for transparency and justice in the region.
