Kaushik Mukerjee, a resident of Burke, has embarked on a captivating journey with his self-published photography book, “Visible Voices: Graffiti Across Berlin.” This artistic venture sheds light on the explosion of graffiti in Berlin following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Through his lens, Mukerjee captures the essence and variety of graffiti found across different neighbourhoods, including Schöneberg, Wedding, and Mitte.
Inspired during the Covid lockdown, Mukerjee delved into the world of digital street photography during a recent trip to Berlin. He was struck by the sheer volume of graffiti art peppered throughout the urban landscape: “Why is there so much graffiti? What does it say about the city?” His compilation layers visual narratives that reflect the city’s rich history and culture.
To create his book, Mukerjee wielded a compact digital camera, wandering the vibrant streets of Berlin to snap around 500 images. He meticulously selected outstanding photos, enhancing their visual appeal for print. The self-design and publication of his book through Mixam proved a fulfilling yet challenging task, culminating in a final product he describes as “incredible.”
Marketing the book has posed its own challenges. Mukerjee relies primarily on social media platforms and is actively engaging with local photography groups and galleries for promotional collaborations. His efforts aim to carve out a niche in a competitive field and share his love for photography with a wider audience.
Living in Burke since 2019, Mukerjee cherishes his local surroundings, particularly enjoying tranquil walks at Lake Barton and exploring the diverse culinary options at the food court of H-Mart. His new book brings a piece of Berlin’s vibrant street art back to Burke, inviting readers on a unique visual journey.
