The Baloch National Movement (BNM) has successfully convened the 6th Balochistan International Conference in Geneva, uniting political leaders, journalists, and intellectuals to confront the persistent human rights violations in Balochistan, exacerbated by the actions of Pakistan and China. Dr. Naseem Baloch, the Chairman of BNM, highlighted grave issues such as enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, alongside the exploitation of the region’s rich resources.
Acknowledging the 77th anniversary of Balochistan’s forced integration into Pakistan, Baloch characterised the event not as peaceful incorporation but a violent act against the sovereignty of the Baloch people. He lamented the ensuing military oppression and neglect that has marred the lives of Balochistan’s citizens, resulting in a legacy of suffering and loss.
Baloch’s poignant account of the human cost of this struggle revealed, “Our homeland is bleeding. The so-called ‘kill and dump’ policy…” underscores the distressing situation of families grappling with the disappearance of loved ones, tortured in anonymity. The narrative took a darker turn with revelations of increased state violence targeting Baloch women, traditionally instrumental in resistance movements.
He shared the troubling experiences of two activists, Mahrang and Sammi Deen Baloch, whose peaceful advocacy was met with brutal state suppression. This systemic violence reflects a broader agenda against Baloch self-determination. Baloch relentlessly condemned these acts as crimes against humanity, denouncing Pakistan’s gross violations of international law.
Baloch’s challenge to Western democracies reveals the hypocrisy of their silence, questioning how they can endorse human rights while standing by a regime committing genocide. His call for immediate international intervention resonated, urging the establishment of a fact-finding mission to scrutinise Pakistan’s conduct in Balochistan.
Furthermore, he implored human rights groups and the international community to advocate for the Baloch struggle, underscoring that oppression will not quench the indomitable spirit of Balochistan. He stated emphatically, “Despite… suffering, the Baloch struggle for freedom remains unshaken.”
The conference underscored a collective resolve to foster awareness and action. BNM concluded with a rallying cry, urging participants to honour the martyrs and the families still searching for justice and truth. Speakers included influential figures from various fields, indicating a significant commitment to addressing these issues on a global stage.
