In the first international break of the year, six players from Union showcased their talents on the international stage, with some shining and others observing from the sidelines.
Guadeloupe’s Jérôme Roussillon demonstrated his prowess by playing the full 90 minutes in both matches against Nicaragua, helping his team secure a spot in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Austrian defender Leopold Querfeld, however, faced disappointment as he watched his team falter in the UEFA Nations League play-offs from the bench, missing out on promotion after a draw and a defeat to Serbia.
The Hungarian squad, which included Andras Schäfer, also faced relegation in League B after losing both matches to Turkiye. Despite scoring Hungary’s only goal in the first match, they succumbed to a 3-1 and 3-0 loss.
Meanwhile, László Bénes participated in Slovakia’s matches but could not help his team secure advancement to League B, as they were eliminated by Slovenia in extra time following a goalless tie over two legs.
On a brighter note, Croatia, represented by Josip Juranovic, reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League Finals but fell short after a penalty shootout against France. Juranovic remained on the bench during both fixtures.
Lastly, Tom Rothe led the German U20 team as captain in two friendly matches, earning a 1-0 victory against Czechia before drawing 1-1 with Portugal, where he played for an hour before being substituted.
During the international break, six Union players participated across various national teams. Jérôme Roussillon helped Guadeloupe qualify for the Gold Cup, while others like Leopold Querfeld, Andras Schäfer, and László Bénes faced disappointing exits. Josip Juranovic and Tom Rothe had differing experiences, with Juranovic watching from the bench and Rothe leading the German U20 team as captain in friendly matches.
In the latest international break, Union’s players experienced a mix of triumph and heartbreak. While Roussillon’s contributions shone in Guadeloupe’s success, Querfeld, Schäfer, Bénes, and Juranovic faced challenges with their respective national teams. Conversely, Rothe’s leadership in the German U20 squad highlighted the positive potential of Union’s young talents, indicating a bright future ahead.
