In the heart of San Antonio, the Culture Commons Gallery has unveiled a striking new exhibition, “Confluence of Cultures: Nuestra Gente, Cultura y Comida.” This showcase features the unique perspectives of 20 local artists, honouring the cultural tapestry that has defined San Antonio. Director of Arts & Culture, Krystal Jones, reflected, “For more than 300 years, cultures have converged in San Antonio to create who we are as a city and people.”
Rich history underscores the exhibition; archaeological findings indicate that Indigenous peoples have inhabited these lands for over 12,000 years. The arrival of Spanish colonists in the 1700s intertwined cultures, leaving lasting impressions visible in art and architecture. This cultural heritage led to the UNESCO designation of San Antonio Missions as a World Heritage Site in 2015, celebrating its global significance.
San Antonio’s culinary legacy reflects this blend as settlers introduced flavours and preservation techniques from diverse regions. The city stands out as the only location in the US with both a UNESCO World Heritage site and a designation as a Creative City of Gastronomy. Colleen Swain from the World Heritage Office stated, “In honour of the upcoming 10th anniversary of San Antonio’s World Heritage designation… we are excited to showcase our city’s dynamic, diverse, and vibrant cultural heritage.”
Artists have created works inspired by UNESCO’s themes, including sustainability and the global significance of culture. This exhibition offers a range of artistic expressions—paintings, drawings, sculptures—that invite viewers to engage with their cultural roots. Featured artists include Abel Aguirre, Adriana Garcia, and Crystal Rocha among others.
The exhibition is free to the public, running from February 13, 2025, to January 16, 2026, at the Culture Commons Gallery, located at 115 Plaza de Armas.
