Kazakhstan showcased its fervour for hydrogen development and regional climate collaboration at the 11th Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) on March 18-19. The Kazakh Energy Ministry reported that Vice Minister Bakytzhan Ilyas shared insights on practical initiatives aiming for hydrogen utilisation, carbon neutrality, and economic decarbonisation during the Green Hydrogen panel discussion.
Ilyas asserted that “Today, hydrogen energy is seen as a strategic direction.” He highlighted Kazakhstan’s vision of green hydrogen as key to energy transition and economic diversification, viewing it as a future alternative to fossil fuels.
During his Berlin visit, Ilyas engaged in several bilateral discussions, notably with Berthold Goeke, director general of climate action in Germany’s Economic Affairs Ministry, focusing on energy security and climate obligations outlined in the Paris Agreement. Goecke praised Kazakhstan’s progress and the country’s potential in renewable energy projects.
Furthermore, Ilyas emphasized partnerships in hydrogen energy, renewable sources, and energy efficiency during talks with Kristina Haverkamp, managing director of the German Energy Agency. Both sides acknowledged the importance of collaboration with the Hydrogen Diplomacy Office in Astana and German institutions.
The delegation also invited German partners to join the upcoming Regional Climate Summit in Astana in 2026. Conversations with Hendrik Meller from H2-diplo centred around pioneering hydrogen diplomacy and furthering sustainable development goals, ensuring cooperative efforts to tackle climate change and enhance energy independence in Central Asia.
Last year’s BETD had underlined the urgent need for developed nations to invest significantly in clean energy in developing countries, emphasising a global commitment to combat climate change effectively.
Kazakhstan affirmed its commitment to hydrogen development and climate cooperation with Germany at the BETD in Berlin, focusing on energy transition and decarbonisation. Vice Minister Bakytzhan Ilyas highlighted the strategic importance of green hydrogen and held discussions with German officials on energy security and climate obligations. Future collaborations and invitations to participate in upcoming climate summits were also key highlights.
Kazakhstan’s participation in the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue highlights its dedication to hydrogen development and climate cooperation with Germany. Through meaningful discussions and collaborations, Kazakhstan is paving the way for energy transition and sustainability. The commitment to strategic partnerships illustrates the nation’s vision for a greener future, inviting international involvement to further advance these goals.
