In Berlin’s historic Am Tacheles, where art and life intertwine, designer Garth Roberts spearheads a remarkable interiors project. His vision is to delve into the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of domesticity inspired by Herzog & de Meuron’s remarkable architectural framework. The initiative, ‘Rooms of Am Tacheles’ (ROA), showcases vignettes created by three distinguished design studios: Fernando Laposse from Mexico City, Berlin’s Lotto Studio, and Milan’s Studioutte.
Each design team occupied a unique space within Am Tacheles, interpreting the building’s essence through their creative lens. The vignettes cleverly eschew traditional furnishings, opting instead for an embrace of the unconventional and unfinished, crafting a tactile journey with unexpected materials and forms. Studying brutalism, Studioutte introduced sumptuous black curtains in vast rooms defined by stark concrete, creating a softer ambiance.
Fernando Laposse’s design playfully celebrates the vibrant pink tones of Brandlhuber+Muck Petzet’s architecture, drawing on natural pink stone and quirky mirrored ceilings. He aimed to challenge old norms while paying homage to sustainability and cultural roots. Lotto Studio, with a minimalist vision, positioned custom aluminium furniture against expansive floor-to-ceiling window frames, seamlessly merging indoor spaces with the outdoors.
Roberts describes ‘Vignettes’ as an ambitious exploration of contemporary design that ignites creativity. “This project is aspirational. It not only presents creative interiors but inspires the imagination of its audience,” he states. Originally built in 1908 and repurposed as a vibrant artists’ hub post-war, Tacheles has evolved into a multi-functional space blending luxurious living, offices, and creativity, all under Herzog & de Meuron’s design, while Roberts ensures aesthetics harmonise with practicality.
