Malcom Seah, a third-year Economics student at Singapore Management University (SMU), is preparing to publish his debut novel, Swimming Lessons, through Penguin Random House SEA on 29 April 2025. Set against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Singapore, this novel delves into themes of sisterhood, identity, and the supernatural, resonating with Malcom’s own experiences. The narrative was profoundly influenced by a personal tragedy when his mother suffered a severe brain haemorrhage shortly after he began writing.
“At first, I felt an odd sense of guilt—like I had written the accident into reality,” Malcom reflected, noting how writing became a therapeutic outlet during this challenging time. While the narrative isn’t autobiographical, it echoes the emotions he grappled with. Crafting this novel amidst the rigours of university life proved challenging; often, he would put the manuscript down for extended periods, returning to it during breaks or less hectic times.
Malcom expressed, “I didn’t always have a clear plan. Sometimes, I’d return to it with fresh eyes and completely rewrite sections… I’m aware that I’m extremely young for an author. That’s why I’m extending an invite to my readers and friends to grow up with me through my prose and paragraphs.”
Contrary to assumptions that economics and fiction writing are worlds apart, Malcom found solace in the contrasts, using both disciplines to stimulate his creativity. “They’re two completely different ways of thinking, which helps me avoid burnout,” he explained. His studies at SMU have similarly influenced his writing, particularly through modules like Big Questions: Wealth and Poverty, which challenged him to explore complex societal themes.
As his publication date approaches, Malcom plans to focus on promoting Swimming Lessons rather than rushing into his next project. While he has other drafts ready, he prioritises giving this book the attention it deserves. “I’m ecstatic for what this year entails… I’m going to embark on multiple novel-related events overseas including panel discussions,” he shared, looking forward to an exciting time ahead.
