David Blanco, the external relations head of Spain’s General Confederation of Labor (CGT), has raised urgent concerns about escalating human rights violations in Western Sahara, attributing these to intensified Moroccan repression. He recalled his recent expulsion from Dakhla by Moroccan authorities, warning of their efforts to obscure the daily persecution faced by Sahrawi civilians from global scrutiny.
In an interview with Algeria’s APS, Blanco noted, “Morocco fears that the world will uncover the harsh reality of oppression in the occupied territories,” highlighting the country’s restrictive measures towards foreign observers, journalists, and human rights activists.
Describing his expulsion as a strategic attempt to intimidate observers, Blanco detailed how he was surveilled upon arrival in Dakhla. He stated, “From the moment I arrived in Dakhla, I sensed an abnormal situation.” His passport was seized, and he was closely monitored by plainclothes agents before being forcibly removed.
He condemned Morocco’s tactics, which include arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, and suppression of online dissent against Sahrawi activists. Blanco pointed out that for foreigners, engaging with these activists often results in being labelled as ‘undesirable’ and facing expulsion.
Blanco called for international awareness and action regarding the systematic abuses occurring within Moroccan-occupied territories. He urged for better reporting on the situation, stating, “Many in Europe struggle to comprehend the extent of these violations,” underlining the necessity of exposing the truth through firsthand accounts.
