Call for Nominations: 2025 EU Human Rights Defenders Award

The European Union Delegation in Uganda, alongside EU Member States, is calling for nominations for the 2025 EU Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Award. Celebrating its 14th year, this award aims to shine a light on the crucial work of Human Rights Defenders in Uganda, who tirelessly advocate for human rights and freedoms in a non-violent manner.

The award seeks to honour an exceptional individual Human Rights Defender who has significantly contributed to the advancement and safeguarding of human rights in Uganda over the past year. Anyone can submit nominations, especially encouraged are submissions from human rights organisations actively working in Uganda.

Human Rights Defenders use non-violent methods to promote and protect recognised human rights and fundamental freedoms. They focus on civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights while advocating for minority group rights. Their activities encompass documenting violations, providing victim support, combatting impunity, facilitating a human rights culture, and engaging in advocacy efforts.

To submit a nomination, send an email to [email protected] with the subject “HRD Award 2025 – application.” Nominations must be made using the specified NOMINATION FORM and be limited to one page. All entries must be received by 17:00 EAT on Friday, 4th April 2025. A shortlist of three candidates will be revealed on 5th May, with the winner announced on 15th May at a ceremony hosted by the Embassy of Sweden.

Previous winners include notable figures such as Jimmy “Spire” Ssentongo and Agather Atuhaire, each recognised for their remarkable efforts in advocating for accountability and social justice in Uganda. Their inspiring stories underscore the vital role Human Rights Defenders play in promoting human dignity and the fight against oppression, demonstrating the importance of this award.
