Concerns Mount Over Trump’s Economic Approach Amid Poll Results

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that 57% of Americans regard President Donald Trump’s economic strategies as overly unpredictable, particularly his assertive import tax policies that have alarmed investors. Around 33% feel his methods aren’t unpredictable, while 11% expressed uncertainty. Notably, even among Republicans, approximately one-third share concerns about Trump’s unpredictability.

Despite reservations regarding his tactics, a significant majority of Republicans, 79%, maintain faith in Trump’s long-term economic policies. Overall, only 41% of respondents believe his approach will be beneficial, with a mere 5% of Democrats sharing that optimism.

A striking 70% of Americans anticipate that rising tariffs will lead to increased grocery prices and everyday expenses. This sentiment is widely echoed across party lines, with 90% of Democrats and 60% of Republicans concurring. Furthermore, 61% of respondents assert that Trump’s foremost priority should be addressing inflation.

The survey, encompassing 1,422 U.S. adults and featuring a 3% margin of error, coincided with Trump’s threats to escalate trade disputes by levying additional tariffs on EU goods. Following the implementation of his 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, major trading partners signalled they would retaliate. “Whatever they charge us, we’re charging them,” Trump declared, cautioning against repercussions if the EU enacts their intended counter-tariffs.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 57% of Americans view Trump as unpredictable in economic matters, with his import taxes causing stock market worries. Despite these concerns, 79% of Republicans believe in the long-term benefits of his policies, though 70% expect rising costs on groceries due to tariffs. The survey highlighted Trump’s contentious announcements regarding EU tariffs, alongside public calls for prioritising price control.

In summary, the poll indicates widespread uncertainty about Trump’s economic unpredictability among Americans. While a strong majority of Republicans uphold confidence in his long-term policies, there remains significant apprehension regarding the immediate impact of tariffs on everyday consumer prices. Trump’s ongoing trade tension with the EU further heightens these economic concerns, emphasising the need for strategic economic clarity.
