Empowering Health Awareness: The Black Family Wellness Expo Unveiled

In the vibrant landscape of health, Black Americans face heightened risks; heart disease, the foremost killer, significantly affects them, as highlighted by the American Heart Association. Alarmingly, the American Cancer Society notes that Black individuals have the highest cancer mortality rates in the U.S., underscoring the necessity for awareness and action, particularly at this weekend’s Black Family Wellness Expo.

Hosted by the Brevard chapter of The Links, Incorporated, the third annual expo aims to illuminate critical health issues faced by the Black community, addressing disparities in health care and economic status. From diabetes education to discussions on kidney disease, mental health, and dental care, the event promises a wealth of information, as well as engaging STEM activities for children, all held at the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Recreation Center.

Ena Leiba, president of the chapter, emphasises the importance of accessibility to health resources, recognising that the Black community often struggles with information on managing health issues like kidney failure and mental health. “What we’re trying to do is bring the resources to them to educate them on how they can better manage their health care situations,” she expressed.

This weekend’s event marks the inaugural Black Wellness Expo in Brevard, following collaboration with the Volusia chapter during previous events. Leiba views this endeavour as crucial, stating that it addresses significant health needs within the community, driven by the experiences and needs of local residents.

The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1946, boasts over 17,000 professional women of African descent across the U.S., the Bahamas, and the U.K. Notables such as Kamala Harris and Val Demings exemplify the calibre of its members, who come from diverse professional backgrounds.

Leiba and programming chair Edna Lawson underscored the organisation’s commitment to combating health disparities through networking and collaboration, swiftly assembling a variety of exhibitors and partners to support the expo. “Many of us are in the health care industry, so we have contacts and networks in the community,” noted Lawson, highlighting the ease in outreach due to existing relationships and expertise.

As the wellness expo aligns with The Links’ core values of friendship, service, and community empowerment, it presents an opportunity to address broader societal issues, including civil rights and economic empowerment. Together, participants across the U.S., Bahamas, and U.K. will engage in this meaningful effort to uplift and educate the Black community on essential health concerns.

The Brevard chapter of The Links, Incorporated is leading the third annual Black Family Wellness Expo, highlighting alarming health disparities faced by Black Americans. The event offers crucial information regarding heart disease, kidney health, and more, aiming to educate the community and provide necessary resources. It also showcases the organisation’s commitment to addressing broader health and societal issues, with a strong focus on service and empowerment.

The Black Family Wellness Expo, spearheaded by The Links, seeks to confront significant health disparities faced by the Black community. It addresses critical issues such as heart disease, kidney failure, and mental health. Not only does the event showcase essential health information, but it also embodies a commitment to community service and empowerment, strengthening the connections vital for ongoing support and wellbeing.
