The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is embarking on a significant Promotion Mission to the Republic of Seychelles, from 10 to 14 March 2025. This initiative, sanctioned by the Seychelles government, aims to further the reach and understanding of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, alongside its protocols and associated global human rights instruments. During this mission, the Commission will engage with local stakeholders to discuss and enhance human rights conditions in the nation.
Leading the delegation is Honourable Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso, who serves as the Commissioner Rapporteur on Seychelles’ human rights situation. He is joined by Honourable Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, the Chairperson of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa. Their mission will be supported by staff from the Secretariat, ensuring a comprehensive approach to human rights advocacy.
The delegation plans to connect with a variety of human rights stakeholders within Seychelles, including government officials, parliament members, judges, police representatives, national institutions, and civil society organisations. This engagement is central to understanding the existing human rights landscape and gathering insight from those actively involved in promoting rights across the country.
Upon conclusion of the Mission, the delegation will share preliminary findings with Seychelles authorities, fostering dialogue on identified issues. Additionally, a Press Conference will be conducted to disseminate these findings to the media and the public, ensuring transparency and continued engagement on human rights matters.
